The Panda Research Centre is located in the Sichuan Province of China. It is the largest and best known panda reserve in China and holds approximately 70% of the world’s pandas. Team 2 from Lord Williams School stayed in the centre for a week last summer. They were divided into 5 small working groups, reporting to a panda keeper and responsible for two pandas. The team was given staff overalls and their first assignments were to clean the cages and feed the pandas on a daily basis.
The team’s effort and initiative were very much appreciated in the Wolong Centre. Lord Williams School made the most of the project and had a positive impact in the environment. More World Challenge teams will be going to the Wolong Centre during their expedition to keep up with the good work in a responsible way.
“It turned out to be an excellent project” a member of the team said. The group enjoyed the interaction with the children at the kindergarten, which was set up to enable the children who were living in the slums to be cared for so their mothers could work during the day. The aims of the project were achievable both in time, technical skills and budget. The team had plenty of space to work without disrupting the kindergarten.
On the last day the Challengers organised a party and grand opening for the children at the kindergarten. In return the kindergarten gave them cards and certificates and the children did a little performance. It was very successful and for many of the Challengers it was the highlight of the expedition. The kindergarten was an extremely nice environment to work in and there is plenty of potential for more project work to be carried out there.

One of the teams from Lord Williams School did their expedition project in the Wolong Panda Research Centre last summer in China. Not only did they take care of the pandas but they had great team initiative to propose improvements in the centre.

| We often get thank you letters from Challengers, parents and teachers and we thought you’d like to see this one from a School Leader of one of out international schools: Inter-Community School Zurich.
From talking to the students before, during, and after the expedition I am always impressed with how much confidence and leadership qualities they acquire throughout the expedition. The learning takes place at different stages for different people. Sometimes a large part of the learning takes place before the expedition, whilst the students are raising the money and learning about the country they are about to visit. Some students learn so much during the expedition, especially when they are the leader and realise that their thoughts and actions count. Many students learn the most when they are back at school and planning the parents’ evening where they present, and reflect on, the experiences they had.
We are building on our outdoors programme all the time at ICS and the World Challenge expedition is one of the culminating experiences to aim toward. This builds on various kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, cycling and travelling field trips that take place in the younger years. I also run the Sports Leaders Award programme for Grade 11 students and it is often the students that have been on expedition that sign up for this optional course. These are the students that we, as a school, are proud to send out into the world. The students that come back from expedition are more confident, enthusiastic, passionate and sensitive to others. They have seen parts of a country that they would never have seen travelling with their families. They have made connections with locals who have such a different life and culture to themselves. They have played football and cricket with children who live in remote villages in the mountains and laughed and communicated with them with very basic gestures and words. This close connection with local children and adults invariably touch our students’ hearts and will stay in their memories forever. We are confident that these experiences will help to shape the choices and decisions that they will make in their future lives. As a school we endeavour to give our students as many opportunities and open them up to as many experiences as possible. The World Challenge expedition is a perfect way of reaching out further into the world and allowing more of the world to touch these very fortunate students.
